NE Portland is a weird one to summarize because it is not really one thing. You've got tree lined blocks near Alberta that feel like a postcard, you've got the busy energy around Hollywood District with its theater marquee and farmers market, and you've got quieter pockets further out that most people driving through never think to stop in. Trying to describe "NE Portland" in one sentence is a little like trying to describe "food." Technically accurate, not actually helpful.

What ties it together, if anything does, is that NE Portland tends to reward people who like a neighborhood with some personality already baked in. You're not building a vibe from scratch here. The coffee shop on the corner has probably been there since before it was cool to have a coffee shop on the corner, and it will happily remind you of that.

If you like the idea of walking to get a coffee and running into three people you know before you even order, you'll love living here. If you'd rather nobody know your business and you can drive to get a coffee in peace, that's also fine, Alberta may not fit your vibe.

Over the next few weeks we're going to walk through a handful of specific NE pockets, starting with Alberta Arts District, because it's the one people ask about most and honestly it deserves its own post. We're not going to pretend we've covered the whole quadrant this month. NE Portland is big, we have all year, and frankly so do you.

For now, here's the general shape of things. Housing stock leans toward classic Portland bungalows and older craftsman style homes, with newer infill scattered in depending on the block. Prices vary more than people expect from one street to the next, which is exactly why "what's it like over there" is a better question for us than for the internet. If you want the honest version, not the version with a filter on it, that's what we're here for.
