NW Portland: The Pearl District

If you've spent any time in Portland, you already have an opinion about the Pearl District. Some people call it slick. Some people call it home. Both are true, and honestly, that's part of the charm.

The Pearl sits just north of downtown, tucked between the Willamette River and NW 23rd, in a stretch of old rail yards and warehouses that spent most of the twentieth century being ignored. Then in the 1980s and 1990s things began to change, one building at a time. Artists moved into the empty buildings because rent was cheap, and the Mayor and developers created new incentives to transform these old rough warehouses into beautiful lofts and condos. The Pearl District was born.

Today those same warehouses hold some of the best browsing in the city. Powell's City of Books anchors the south end of the neighborhood, and it's the kind of place where you go in for one paperback and leave an hour or two later with four or more. A few blocks north, Tanner Springs Park turns a former rail yard into a quiet pocket of wetlands and walking paths, right in the middle of the city. Jamison Square isn't far behind, with a fountain that turns into a wading pool the second it gets warm out.

Food and drink is where the Pearl really shows off. You'll find everything from Peruvian small plates to counter service Thai bowls to a steakhouse dramatic enough to have its own golden elk over the bar. A longtime local brewery has been pouring pints here for years, and on First Thursdays the galleries throw open their doors for one of the best evening walks in the city, part art opening, part street party, part farmers market.

None of that comes without a trade off. You're paying for walkability and polish here, and the housing stock leans heavily toward condos and lofts rather than single family homes, so if a yard is non negotiable for you, the Pearl probably isn't your neighborhood. But if you want to walk to dinner, catch the streetcar into downtown or over to Nob Hill, and fall asleep to the sound of the city instead of crickets, this is about as good as it gets.
