NE Portland: Woodlawn & King

Continuing our neighborhood tour around NE Portland, this time we're looking at Woodlawn and King, two neighborhoods that don't always make the headline lists but consistently show up on the "actually, I really like it here" lists from the people who live there.

Woodlawn centers around a genuinely charming little park and a small cluster of local businesses that give the area a real sense of center, without the crowds you'd find in busier commercial strips. Housing here leans toward classic early twentieth century homes, many well maintained, some clearly waiting for the right owner to take on a project.

King, just south, has a similar residential feel with a bit more density mixed in, and a strong sense of community that longtime residents will happily tell you about if you give them the chance. It's one of those neighborhoods that rewards actually talking to people who live there instead of just driving through and forming an opinion from the car window.

If you like the idea of a small neighborhood park anchoring your daily walk and a community that actually knows its neighbors, you'll love living in Woodlawn. If you're drawn to a slightly denser residential feel with strong community ties and a shorter commute into the city core, King is worth a serious look.

Both neighborhoods tend to offer more value relative to their location than people initially assume, mostly because they haven't gotten the same attention as Alberta or Hollywood District, at least not yet. We've watched enough NE Portland pockets go from "hidden gem" to "everyone knows about it now" to say this with some confidence, if you're drawn to the area, sooner tends to beat later.
